Our success is a result of our distinctive partnership approach.

We are active and hands-on partners, working closely with both shareholders and the management team to help realise the company’s full potential.
We bring broad external perspectives that complement the industry knowledge of our founder partners and management teams.
We build upon the unique and compelling attributes of each business we invest in, while adding structures and supports to enable accelerated and sustainable growth.

We support our partners and management teams by improving organisational capability and capacity in areas fundamental to realising the growth potential of our investments.

Strategic Planning

At the outset of every partnership, we invest heavily in developing a strategic plan for the business. This includes setting clear growth objectives, making conscious decisions about where to invest resources and prioritise focus, and an execution plan for many of the areas outlined below (e.g., technology and artificial intelligence, growth initiatives, business development, capital investment).

Strategic planning becomes an ongoing process across our investments with annual strategy refresh cycles and regular discussions at board level to enable the business to accelerate and pivot the approach as required.

Technology and Artificial Intelligence

Setting a strategy for how the business will leverage technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to strengthen its competitive advantage and future-proof its business model. This often includes assessment and modernisation of the business's data architecture, core business operating systems (ERP, CRM, HRIS), and accelerating adoption of AI tools across the business and within common workflows.

Capability and Capacity Building

Strengthening the foundations to pursue accelerated growth. This often means investing in senior leadership, reviewing the organisation structure and operating model, enhancing reporting and performance management processes, and investing in systems to support improved decision making.

Growth Initiatives

Investing in initiatives that will materially expand the addressable market and deepen our market share or relationship with key clients.

We take a rigorous analytical approach to ensure that we identify the areas of greatest opportunity, including new product or service expansion, entering new markets, negotiating joint ventures and partnerships, or executing acquisitions. This enables us to jointly develop an execution plan with our partners that provides the greatest opportunity of success while managing downside risk.

Business Development

Strengthening the business development function to support accelerated growth. This involves ensuring the business has the right resourcing in its business development function, identifying the most prospective growth options, increase the velocity and size of the sales pipeline through traditional and digital sale/marketing channels, and lifting sales conversion rates.

Capital Management

Supporting our partners and portfolio companies to efficiently manage capital deployment. This can often involve raising debt facilities, restructuring, tax planning and management, and implementing and realising value creation strategies in portfolio investments.

Grant Rule
Founder, MessageMedia

"Mercury were exceptional. Monthly eight hour board meetings brought rigour and focus while their laconic humour kept things cheerful. We made tough calls together that ultimately proved crucial and Mercury focused us on three crucial strategic goals that they knew would be important to acquirers.

When the exit window opened, the Mercury team orchestrated the entire process in masterful way – all the while keeping me informed about the rationale for every recommendation.

Choosing Mercury was one of the best business decisions I ever made."

“Many private equity funds will offer you money. Most will claim they bring strategic insights and networks to leverage your growth. Few will offer the respect that accompanies true partnership and commitment to work alongside you through the good times and the bad.

We enjoyed a great working relationship with the Mercury team, they were there when we needed help with the hard stuff, and they let us execute when we had it covered.

The highest compliment I can offer, is I’d do it all again!”

"Mercury were instrumental in the growth and evolution of our business. They were hands-on shareholder partners alongside me, helping us execute many of our growth projects - including opening new offices, recruiting senior talent, and evolving our BD approach and systems.

Mercury were highly collaborative and also brought experience across a wide range of other industries and businesses that we hadn't had before."

Founder, FiftyFive5

"Mercury were more a trusted strategic growth partner than an investor. They brought a powerful combination of management consulting, strategic finance and investment banking capability to the table.

But, they also invested time to deeply understand our business and build strong, collaborative and productive working relationships with leadership and the senior team. That created trust… they trusted us to run the business and we trusted them to navigate our growth path through to a very successful exit."

"Partnering with Mercury Capital was a very productive experience. They brought capital, discipline, and strategic thinking to accelerate our acquisition programme and professionalise the business, which contributed to making us a highly sought-after asset.

When the market conditions changed and the decision was to sell AAH, Mercury’s guidance through the sale process delivered an outcome for the founding shareholders that exceeded what any of us had originally envisaged."

"Mercury Capital was an exceptional partner in the growth of our allied health business. Their support, strategic focus, and commercial expertise helped us build a stronger business and significantly increase its value.

Without their partnership, I would never have achieved the successful outcome that I did."

Greg Howell
Former CEO, Hexagon

"We teamed up with Mercury in 2013 to take a position in the self adhesive label market. Across eight years we completed and integrated seven acquisitions in AU & NZ. Hexagon became the holdco for a decentralised label group with annual revenue ~NZ$210m.

It would have been impossible without Mercury’s expertise, funding and most of all their ambition. They were pivotal in our M&A moves and very strategic in their governance approach. Together we built a highly profitable, competitively differentiated and disciplined business."

“Mercury took a hands-on approach to strategic planning from the outset of our partnership. This helped align our team around a common goal, identify the critical initiatives, and establish the right team, technology, reporting and processes to execute the plan.”
